Meeting of Weghts and Measures - 4/10/2016

Mr. Imran Hussain, Minister, Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs on Tuesday took a review meeting with the Secretary, Legal Metrology and Controller, Weights & Measures / Legal Metrology Department along with officers regarding functioning of the Department.

The Minister directed officials to ensure that citizens obtain accurate quantities of various commodities especially in view of the ensuing festive season of Navratri, Dussehra, Moharram and Diwali and there is value for money.


Department of Weights & Measures, also called Legal Metrology Department, has been tasked with ensuring that customers get due value of the cost paid on the commodities. The Department shall ensure compliance of Packaged Commodity Rules and also educate the customer about mandatory declarations on the packaged commodities i.e. the name and address of the manufacturer/packer/importer, the common name of the product in the package, the net quantity, month and year of manufacturing or pre-packing, MRP (inclusive of all taxes) and name, address, telephone number of the person who can be contacted by the consumer in case of a complaint. 


Mr. Hussain also directed the Department that all the officers/officials working in Weights and Measure Department should visit the markets in their respective areas and submit periodic reports. They were also asked to ensure that the norms of Packaged Commodity Rules are strictly being followed by the shop-keepers/manufacturers/dealers, apart from ensuring that only stamped electronic/manual/weighing instruments are being used by them.


The Minister also emphasized about the accurate stamping of Auto Taxi Metres, stamping of nozzles at Petrol Pumps, Electronic Weighing Machines and manual weighing instruments because, if the erring instruments are being used by the shopkeepers and other agencies, it will deeply affect upon the consumers’ rights. He also directed that the consumers may be informed about their rights through Hoardings/Pamphlets and advertisements in leading newspapers.


Mr. Hussain also appreciated the officers of the Department for the sincere efforts being made for creating awareness among the citizens regarding Packaged Commodity Rules.
